A Journey With Mr. Pandiguero

A Journey With Mr. Pandiguero

30 October – 2 November 2025

There are days when my phone stays quiet, and there are days when a single message can spark a story worth remembering.

30 October 2025 was one of those days.

That afternoon, a WhatsApp notification appeared on my screen—an Indonesian number, a short message, a simple inquiry about booking a tour. Nothing unusual at first glance. The message was written in Indonesian, but the sender claimed he was a foreigner. I assumed, as always, that he must have lived in Indonesia for some time.

His name: David Pandiguero.

His nationality: Spanish.

I replied politely, as I always do, and soon realized he was traveling alone and needed assistance for a journey across East Java. After discussing dates and routes, I contacted Putra, my reliable driver—someone I’ve trained for years to handle guests with professionalism and warmth. I informed him, “Prepare yourself. We’ll have a Spanish guest. Treat him well, as always.”

He simply answered, “Siap, Mas. Leave it to me.”

Before dawn, Putra left Malang and drove through winding mountain roads toward the majestic cliffs of Tumpak Sewu. The plan was simple: pick up Mr. Pandiguero at the waterfall, then continue the journey toward Ijen Crater, one of the jewels of East Java tourism.

The weather was gentle, mist hanging above the forests like a soft white curtain. Putra told me later that Mr. Pandiguero was friendly, calm, and deeply fascinated by Indonesia’s landscapes—something I always love to hear from travelers.

They began the long drive toward Ijen, the mountains rising and falling along the horizon like the back of a sleeping dragon. Everything seemed normal—just another tour, another traveler, another journey under the Java Jive skies.

But I had no idea what surprise awaited me the next morning.

Putra arrived at Ijen and updated me as usual. The weather was good, the trek was planned, and the guide was on standby.

Then I told Putra, “Please ask him for a photo of his passport for our administration.”

Routine procedure. Nothing unusual.

But the moment the photo arrived… I froze.

There, on the passport, clearly written:

An employee of the Embassy of Spain to Indonesia.

For a second I couldn’t believe it. Among thousands of tourists we’ve handled, this was something different. Unexpected. Special.

I immediately contacted my trusted Ijen guide.

I said, “Give him the best service you can. He’s not an ordinary traveler. He’s an Embassy staff member. Treat him with utmost professionalism.”

My guide didn’t hesitate. He rushed to the Ijen post, greeted Mr. Pandiguero personally, and escorted him up the volcanic slopes to witness the blue fire and the sunrise—one of the rarest natural wonders on Earth. The photographs they captured were beautiful, glowing with mist, sulfur light, and the pride of a traveler who had reached the top of East Java.

A Small Story—Yet One We Will Always Remember

To some, this may just be a short travel story. Another client. Another tour. Another weekend.

But for us at Java Jive Journeys, it is much more.

It is a reminder that every message, every traveler, every journey holds a story—sometimes simple, sometimes unexpected, sometimes carrying the weight of a diplomat’s footsteps.

We are honored—truly honored—to have hosted Mr. David Pandiguero, a staff member of the Spanish Embassy.

And like all meaningful stories, this one will stay in our memory.

Because long after the journey ends, the story remains.

And we will always proudly keep it as part of the growing journal of Java Jive Journeys.
